PSE is also the first owner to set aside funding for community transition planning efforts. PSE voluntarily secured $10 million from ratepayers and shareholders through its 2017 General Rate Case to create the Colstrip Community Fund. Over the interim, PSE participated in good faith in numerous Colstrip Community Impact Advisory Group planning meetings in the City of Colstrip and attended community listening sessions in Colstrip, Forsyth and Lame Deer over the span of 10 months. COLSTRIP: A LONGSTANDING LEGACY OF CONTRIBUTIONS
Puget Sound Energy helped build Colstrip in the 1970-80’s and has been contributing to the economic well-being of the community for close to 50 years. Over the past five decades, PSE has purchased millions of tons of Montana coal, contributing hundreds of millions in taxes to the benefit of the City of Colstrip, Rosebud County and the State of Montana.
PSE was proud to be a leader in pro-actively working to develop a funding mechanism that allowed it to become the first of six owners of Colstrip to contribute to the newly created Colstrip Community Fund. Looking forward, PSE plans to invest significant funds for Colstrip remediation and decommissioning.
PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE: INVESTING IN MONTANA
As one of six owners of the Colstrip generating facility, Puget Sound Energy is the first owner to establish a separate funding mechanism for cleanup. PSE placed $95 million in hydro-related Treasury Grants into a retirement account to fund and recover prudently incurred decommissioning and remediation costs for Colstrip Units 1 & 2.
